Experts in Solar Energy Writer & Researcher

John Tanko, the founder of Top Solar Picks website topsolarpicks.com
John Tanko,

is the founder of Top Solar Picks (topsolarpicks.com)

I’m John Tanko, founder of Top Solar Picks. Since 2013, I have worked as a solar installer and inverter builder. I design and build pure sine wave solar inverters from scratch and install full solar systems (panels, inverters, and batteries) in real-world conditions.

This hands-on experience allows me to provide practical, field-tested insights in every review and buying guide on Top Solar Picks — not just theoretical knowledge or manufacturer specifications.

How We Test

John Tanko, solar inverter builder and installer, next to a real hybrid solar inverter system installation

At Top Solar Picks, our approach is built on real-world experience—not just product specifications or marketing claims.

Our founder, John Tanko, has been actively working in the solar energy field since 2013, with hands-on experience in solar installation, inverter systems, and off-grid power solutions. Over the years, he has built and tested a wide range of systems used by homes and small businesses.

As a solar installer and technician, John brings practical field knowledge into every review we publish—covering real installation work, system troubleshooting, and performance testing under real usage conditions.

Inside one of his custom-built 600W pure sine wave inverters, key components such as the EGS002 SPWM driver board (responsible for clean sine wave output) and high-performance aluminum heat sinks (for thermal protection) are carefully integrated and tested for reliability.

John Tanko holding a 600 watt solar inverter he designed and built from scratch, showing internal circuit board and components

I don’t just review inverters — I build them from scratch. This is the main circuit board from a 600W pure sine wave solar inverter I designed and constructed myself, using components such as the EGS002 SPWM driver board for clean sine wave output.

This hands-on engineering experience allows us to evaluate solar products based on efficiency, durability, safety, and real-world performance—not just manufacturer claims.

Because we understand how these systems work internally, we’re able to identify build quality, detect weak components, and separate true innovation from marketing hype.

Research & Product Analysis

Building on this foundation, we expand into large-scale research and testing.

We’ve spent 130+ hours researching and analyzing major portable solar generators, focusing on what truly matters for real users.

Our rankings are based on:

  • Real-world capacity tests (verified watt-hours)
  • Solar input performance in different weather conditions
  • Battery chemistry (LiFePO4 preferred)
  • Expansion capability
  • Port selection, app quality, and warranty
  • Price-to-performance ratio
  • Insights from 10,000+ verified user reviews

We also work to get hands-on access to products from trusted brands like EcoFlow, Bluetti, Jackery, and Eco-Worthy to evaluate build quality and real-world performance.

Real-World Validation

We validate our findings through real usage—testing appliances like refrigerators, TVs, fans, and essential electronics to ensure recommendations are practical and reliable.

Inverter Builds & Tests – Built by Me

This project was designed and built by John Tanko, founder of Top Solar Picks. I don’t just review solar inverters—I design, build, and test them from scratch to verify real-world performance.

In the video above, I show the full process of building a 600W pure sine wave solar inverter, including component assembly, final enclosure, real-load testing with a deep-cycle battery, and live performance monitoring.

This hands-on work gives me practical knowledge that most reviewers don’t have. I understand real efficiency, heat management, surge handling, waveform quality, and common failure points because I’ve built and tested these systems myself in real conditions.

That’s why my reviews of products like EcoFlow, Bluetti, Eco-Worthy, Jackery and Felicity Solar are based on actual field experience — not just manufacturer specifications.

Solar FAQs

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. The electricity is converted by an inverter into usable power for homes and businesses.

How long do solar panels last?

Most solar panels last 25–30 years or longer. Manufacturers typically offer 25-year performance warranties.

How much can homeowners save with solar?

Savings depend on energy usage, location, and system size. Many homeowners reduce electricity bills by 50%–100%.

Do solar panels require maintenance?

Solar panels require minimal maintenance. Occasional cleaning and system monitoring help maintain optimal performance.
